Laboratory

Laboratory tests are a critical tool in the clinical evaluation of hematopoiesis, hemostasis, host immunity and cancer diagnosis.
Our Facility is equipped with automated instruments designed to perform complete blood counts, chemistry profiles, tumor markers, and coagulation tests. We also draw blood and send it to various reference laboratories for further testing. The application of molecular biology and genetic techniques has greatly contributed to recent advances in Hematology and Oncology.

The precise diagnosis of many hematologic and oncologic diseases, detection of susceptibility to develop complications depends on the identification of mutated genes. For that reason our Physician orders these additional testing like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), Cytogenetics, B-T-Cell gene rearrangement, Flow Cytometry and Molecular Markers to further study your blood, bone marrow biopsy specimens.

Our laboratory is CLIA Certified, has a registered medical technologist to run your tests and is supervised by our medical director.

Our Physician and Nurse Practitioner offers genetic counseling and testing for BRCA1 and BRACA 2 mutation testing. These tests help to determine whether you carry the gene mutation that increases your risk for both Breast and Ovarian Cancer.

Women with BRCA mutation have:

  • 33-50% risk of developing breast cancer by age 50 and a 56%-87% risk by age 70
  • 27%-44% chance of developing ovarian cancer by age 70

    Some Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the testing process like? After meeting with your doctor you will need to sign an informed consent form and provide a small blood sample. Then we will have the results in about 4 weeks.

Will my health insurance pay for the BRAC Analysis test? Yes. Most health insurance companies cover the test.

Can my health insurance company refuse coverage based on the results? No. The Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 protects patient privacy and prohibits health insurance discrimination based on genetic information.
